Boston Red Sox Designate Veteran Reliever For Assignment After Tough Series in Chicago

The Boston Red Sox have designated right-handed pitcher Tayler Scott for assignment, MassLive.com's Christopher Smith reported Sunday morning. Smith also reported that right-hander Jake Faria has been added to the major league roster in his place.

Scott made four appearances with the Red Sox this season – two before the All-Star break and two after. The 31-year-old righty tossed one scoreless inning in each of his first two outings with Boston.

On Friday against the Chicago Cubs, however, Scott was unable to get through the ninth inning, allowing one hit and walking two batters to load the bases with his team clinging onto an 8-3 lead. Manager Alex Cora turned to Scott again Saturday, when he entered the game and allowed three hits, a walk and two earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched.

Third baseman Patrick Wisdom, the Cubs' No. 9 hitter, launched a two-run home run off of Scott in the fourth inning. Chicago won the game 10-4.

Scott started the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, signing a minor league deal with the club in January. Thanks to his 1.37 ERA in 19.2 innings of work with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Scott got the call to join the big league roster.

After pitching 3.2 scoreless innings across his first two appearances with Los Angeles, Scott posted a 23.14 ERA in his next four outings. Opposing batters were hitting .417 against Scott with an 1.196 OPS.

The Dodgers designated Scott for assignment on June 17, then traded him to the Red Sox for cash considerations on June 22. Scott had been part of Boston's active roster since July 4.

Scott was the first South African-born player ever to play in MLB.

Including his stint with the San Diego Padres in 2022 and his appearances with the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles in 2019, Scott owns a 10.18 career ERA with an 0-1 record and a 2.289 WHIP.

Scott's replacement, Faria, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021. The 29-year-old is 9-9 with a 4.70 ERA for his career, drawing starts in 29 of his 72 appearances with the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks

The Red Sox and Cubs will face off again Sunday, having split the previous two games. First pitch for the rubber match in Chicago is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET.
