The Dallas Cowboys had to make a couple of tough phone calls on Tuesday to fourth-string offensive weapons Malik Davis and Sean McKeon, cutting them both. The running back and tight end could re-sign with the team for the practice squad, according to Dallas Morning News‘ Michael Gehlken.

Davis, undrafted in 2022 out of Florida, and McKeon, undrafted out of Michigan in 2020, trailed their counterparts in training camp.

The Cowboys have a 1-2-3-punch with Tony Pollard, Rico Dowdle and rookie Deuce Vaughn in the running backs room.

As for the tight ends, Dallas likes what it has in 2022 fourth-rounder Jake Ferguson, along with 2023 second-rounder Luke Schoonmaker and former Indiana TE Peyton Hendershot.

In the preseason, the former Florida Gators running back had 22 carries for 77 yards. Davis also added three catches for 15 yards, all in the final preseason game versus the Raiders.

McKeon also recorded his lone preseason stats in the final game versus the Raiders: two catches for 15 yards, including one catch for a first down.

Cowboys waive Jabril Cox

The Cowboys also reportedly cut linebacker Jabril Cox ahead of the NFL’s roster deadline at 4 p.m. ET, according to multiple reports.

Cox is the second member of the 2021 draft class to get waived on Tuesday. The Cowboys snagged him at No. 115 overall out of LSU. He was the first of two fourth-round picks but hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in Dallas. Starting with Micah Parsons, the five players drafted ahead of Cox in 2021 are all significant contributors to the Dallas defense.

The former Tiger played in 16 regular-season games over the last two seasons, tallying eight tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. In preseason action, Cox had five tackles, including four on Saturday versus the Raiders.

Per Gehlken, Cox is a likely candidate for the team’s practice squad.

Dallas roster dwindling down to 53 men

Dallas released defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna early on Tuesday. Bohanna, a 2021 sixth-round draft pick out of Kentucky, played in 27 regular games over two seasons for Dallas.

Bohanna tallied 29 tackles for the Cowboys over his first two seasons in the league. He didn’t record sacks but had 4.5 tackles for loss in 2022. He didn’t appear in postseason play for Dallas.

The team also chose to release safety Sheldrick Redwine to get down to 53 men on the roster. The former fourth-round pick out of Miami suffered a hamstring injury in the Cowboys’ second preseason game versus the Seattle Seahawks and exited after making two tackles.

Redwine last appeared in a regular-season game in 2021 while playing for the Miami Dolphins. He started his career with the Cleveland Browns.

Despite getting the ax, the released players could re-sign to the Cowboys practice squad on Wednesday if they aren’t claimed off of waivers.
