Florida Gators have their next Anthony Richardson as the offense shows flashes of greatness in spring game
Matt Pendleton/Gainesville Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK

When Anthony Richardson left for the NFL, finding his replacement was always going to be a tough task for the Florida Gators. Graham Mertz performed admirably last season, but clearly doesn't bring anywhere near the same athletic upside and NFL-ready arm strength. Enter DJ Lagway, five star true freshman. A 6'3", 240-pound monster athlete with a rocket arm and mobility.

While Graham Mertz still has the starting job for now (and perhaps for this whole upcoming season), it's nice to know that the Gators' future is in good hands.

He started a bit slow in the Florida spring game, overthrowing a receiver, then taking a sack. But shortly thereafter he made an absolutely absurd throw to Aidan Mizell for a touchdown between three defenders. It was an absolute laser, and certainly a throw you would normally only see on Sundays.

DJ Lagway was already a highly touted recruit heading into his final high school season, but then finished up his career by completing over 72% of his passes, averaging over 350 passing yards per game, and adding nearly 1000 yards on the ground in his final year alone. That kind of dynamic dual threat play is quite reminiscent of Anthony Richardson. He may not be quite the athlete, since literally no one else has been in the history of the NFL Combine, but Lagway's potential is clearly sky high.

Lagway ended up finishing the Florida spring game completing 12 of his 21 passes for over 170 yards, tossing two touchdowns and throwing one early pick. It wasn't a perfect performance, but it's one that flashed five star and future first round arm talent.

DJ Lagway is still just 18 years old, and his high school classmates still won't graduate until next month, but he's already making throws like an NFL quarterback. Florida fans may have to wait a little bit before they see him fully unleashed, but Lagway's future is bright.
