FC Barcelona were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the most painful of ways known to man. The Blaugrana, despite having got the better of Paris Saint-Germain in recent times, were in firm control for the larger part of the tie. After leading 3-2 in the first leg, Barcelona scored the all-important fourth just 12 minutes into the second leg.

Disaster struck the Catalans in the 29th minute, when Ronald Araujo brought down Bradley Barcola at the edge of the box. What followed was a heartbreaking affair, for Barcelona lost hold of the tie bit by bit, and then all together. While Ilkay Gundogan spoke to the press, defending the referee’s decision to show a red card, Araujo, it seemed, , did not agree.

Gundogan's words? I'd rather keep for myself what I really think. I have certain values that others need to respect. Ronald Araujo said in a press conference

The defender’s comments have sparked a lot of commotion on X, with many defending Gundogan’s comments. A complete meltdown at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium culminated in Barcelona losing the tie 6-4.

Ilkay Gundogan reacts to Ronald Araujo’s tie-deciding red card

Barcelona fans were enraged after the match official gave Ronald Araujo his marching orders against PSG. While it is easy to draw back the origin of Barcà’s meltdown to ‘that’ unfortunate red card, Ilkay Gundogan’s surprising take had many at a loss for words.

Following the game, treble winner and midfielder Gundogan spoke to the press. Despite being frustrated at the result, Gundogan replied with composure and did not point fingers afterwards.

If he fouled him, I guess it's a red card. In these kind of crucial moments, you need to be sure to get the ball. If not, you have to stay away. To get a red card and go one man down so early just kills the game. Ilkay Gundogan said in a post-match interview

The midfielder also admitted that he wasn’t sure whether the forward (Barcola) would have reached the ball in the first place. His ‘indirect’ criticism of Araujo has caused commotion on social media, with the Uruguayan’s response adding fuel to the fire. As fans come to the conclusion that there is a rift within the dressing room, Xavi Hernandez has a lot to do if he is to leave the club with the dressing room ‘intact’.
