Jessica Pegula thrashes Liudmila Samsonova to claim Canadian Open title
David Kirouac-USA TODAY Sports

Jessica Pegula has won her third WTA title after beating Liudmila Samsonova in the Canadian Open final.

Pegula beat the Russian, 6-1 6-0, in a final that only lasted 49 minutes.

Samsonova had only played her semi-final hours prior due to rain delays, and Pegula paid homage to her opponent who had reached her first career WTA 1000 final.

It is the WTA third title of Pegula's career, and the second at this level after she triumphed in Guadalajara at the back end of last year.

"We're out on tour to win tournaments and to win titles every single week, but tennis can be really tough where you sometimes lose a lot," said Pegula after the final.

"Even when you're winning a lot of matches, you're still not winning tournaments, so it can get tough."

The 29-year-old added, "Winning a week like this week makes it all worth it and makes you want to keep going for more. I'll be right back at it tomorrow in Cincinnati."

En route to winning the title in Montreal, Pegula beat world No.1 Iga Swiatek and her doubles partner Coco Gauff.

The No.3 explained how those victories felt, "Beating Coco and beating Iga were two really tough wins back-to-back, and being able to do that and then just come out today and play a really clean match was kind of great.

"I felt like I didn't have a ton of pressure at any point or I wasn't worried too much today."

Pegula will now turn her attention to the Cincinnati Masters, where she has reached the quarter-final on two occasions.

As the third seed she has received a bye to the second round, and will play either Martina Trevisan or Bernarda Pera.
